Computer System Security: Policing Your System

Crime is a real issue in our society. In some cases it proves very difficult for law enforcement officials to get a grip on and keep it under control. They have to use a number of different methods to prevent, track and fight crime. Theft and corruption of information are also issues in computer networks and, as with other crimes; they can be difficult to stop. Computer system security uses a number of methods to prevent these types of attacks from happening.

The biggest problem with most computer system security is that access does need to be granted to some, and in many cases, many people. If the matter was just to prevent anyone from accessing it, the solutions would be simple, but the system still needs to be open to the right individuals and yet be extremely difficult and preferably impossible for untrustworthy individuals such as hackers to get in to.

Because the threats to computer systems are many and come in a variety of different guises, it is important for every computer system to have layers of protection on different levels. Of course, the more bases are covered the less likely the information saved in the system will be compromised.

Hackers make use of a number of different “resources” to obtain sensitive or private information. Some of these include spyware, viruses, worms, Trojan horses and adware, among others. They can cause a great deal of damage on a personal level and can really upset a business too.

The first step in ensuring computer system security is to verify that the user is authentic. This might be done with a name and password, which is used in virtually every security system. On top of this there is also a security token, ATM card or cell phone, and for three factor authentification there may be fingerprint or retinal scans.

Firewall is the next level of security that is necessary to keep intruders out of the computer system. It ensures that users only access the services that are meant to be available to them. This can be effective but is not necessarily effective against content that might be harmful such as Trojan horses, worms, spyware and spam.

Good antivirus software is what is needed to take care of malware such as those mentioned above. Because the malicious software is constantly being changed, it is important to keep up with updates on your antivirus software.

You can be your own police force and devise a plan for your computer system security that will help to keep your sensitive information safe and prevent theft or corruption. Using all types of prevention to ensure you have covered all the areas of potential threat will help you to beat the malware and feel secure on your system.
